Screen Cap Quiz of the Week

And But So the beat goes on. Culled from my DVD collection, I have stolen some moments from a couple of dvd's and will now attempt to blow your mind by getting you to guess what they are. This week's two films could not be more unalike, but if you manage to be the first person to figure out their identity, you could win a Great Big Prize. Last week, Will H. took home the figurative bacon, and now sports a beautiful red, maple-leaf crested, Victoria, B.C., Canada baseball cap. This week's winner will win an actual Digital Video Disc of the film of Douglas Coupland's first scrip brought to screen, Everything's Gone Green.

As always, remember, no cheating. You'll just feel dirty in the morning. Bonne Chance, Mes Amis.

Okie doke, for those in need of aid, I've tossed up a couple of clues.

And one last clue, hopefully, to round out this week's competition. I swear, if you listen really carefully, you can hear Bob Dylan singing...

ALL RIGHTY THEN, WOULD IT HELP YOU IF I TOLD YA THAT IT'S A CHICKEN GETTING BLOWED UP REAL GOOD IN SCREEN CAP 1, AND THAT SLIM PICKENS IS DYING A SLOW DEATH IN THE LAST CAP?

I THOUGHT SO...

Cap No. 1 for Film no. 1:

Clue no. 1 for film no. 1

Final (?) clue for the cowboy movie

Cap No. 1 for Film No. 2:

Clue no. 1 for film no. 2

Well, here goes nothing:

1. Blazing Saddles

2. Persona

Well Paul, you have one right, and it ain't the Mel Brooks film. Film no. 2 is indeed the Bergman classic, the first shot being that of Liv Ullman's eyeball right on up close, and the second gives us Ullman walking through a dreamy scene, with Bibi Anderson asleep on the bed in the foreground.

Now, what could that cowboy film be?

It's not "The Quick and the Dead" is it?

Could it be The Life and Times of Judge Roy Bean? I haven't seen the movie in 20 years but I just remember he loved to hang people (after escaping a hanging himself) and the kids kind of get used to having a gallows around in town so they start to see it as a plaything.

OK, I'll give it one more shot and then let someone else take a crack at it.

Is #1 from The Wild Bunch?

OK, that's all I've got.

Well, let's put it this way. You're playing in the right ball park.

I tried to leave this before but I don't know if it worked. Is the western The Life and Times of Judge Roy Bean?

And when I say "you" I mean Paul. It is neither The Quick and the Dead nor The Life and Times of Roy Bean. However, as for the Wild Bunch, not a bad guess.

Cap No.1 is from Peckinpah's Pat Garret & Billy The Kid, that I'm pretty sure of. No idea about No. 2, though.

(And thanks for taking over from Cinemarati - I'm really sad that they've quit.)

I was going to let someone else take a crack at it, but since not too many people have taken the bait...

Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid.

Yes, and Yes! However, since Kiki came through first, there will be no winner of this week's prize. The first film is indeed Peckinpah's flawed but quite intriguing Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid (Bob Dylan throws a knife into a guys neck! Take that, you hippies!), and the second is Ingmar Bergman's thoroughly brilliant Persona.

Back later this week with another quiz. And Kiki, I'm glad to keep up the tradition, though sad that I can no longer do it at Cinemarati.
